While organizing "lucky money" red envelopes for Lunar New Year (Tet), a Vietnamese mother learned that individuals were pinning their bank account QR codes on their children to gather the much sought-after lixi.

Hang, a 27-year-old Hanoi office worker thought the idea was sensible and called a gift store to custom make a brooch for her son and a hairpin QR code for her daughter.

"I received the things in about three days, totaling VND80,000 (including shipping expenses). I can easily "swipe" the code to transmit money because the product is plainly printed," Hang said.

Together, her friends created keychains, badges, and hairpins and prepared to wait for this Tet to exchange lucky money in a novel method.

While browsing social media in Ho Chi Minh City, 31-year-old Minh Nhat came across an advertisement for a business that could print QR codes on phone covers with New Year's themes.

For this Tet, he purchased a pair for himself and his wife that would cost VND200,000 ($8.18) and have their bank account printed on the case.

He waited a few days before receiving two striking red cases with functional QR codes.

However, although being easy to use and entertaining, lucky money transfers using QR codes might be misinterpreted as being rude or overly practical, psychologist La Linh Nga stated.

"Giving lucky money will lose its appeal if QR codes are scanned; red envelopes with blessings and well wishes will no longer be given. While money may be wasted, fortunate money envelopes are heirlooms, she added.

Additionally, senior individuals who are not tech-savvy should not use QR scanning.

The psychologist advises against applying this trend to groups of young people who are not connected to one another and to limit its use to recreational activities solely to prevent unpleasant situations.

Parents also need to emphasize to their kids the value of giving fortunate money and preserving the custom, and they should tell them that this fad is just a fun way to experience internet transfers.
