A few years back, a man was able to enter a terminal at Chennai International Airport using a fake ticket, allowing him to see off his wife and spend an additional few hours with her.

However, on his way out, he was caught by Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel.

In fact, there have been several reports of people attempting to enter the Chennai airport terminals with fake tickets in the past.

To prevent similar situations and improve airport security, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has used 2D barcode scanners.

According to AAI officials, under the new system, when an air passenger enters a terminal, their ticket with a barcode will be scanned, rather than just checked, by CISF officers.

"So far, the CISF officials would just see the ticket and ID proof and let the passengers in.

However, this 2D barcode scanner is linked to the airline database so that CISF personnel may view the flight time and status. It will prevent anyone with fake tickets from gaining entrance to the terminal," an official stated.

Currently, 4 out of 16 entrance gates are equipped with these scanners. While they are now only installed at the entry gates, authorities indicated they plan on placing them in the security hold area as well.

Aside from security concerns, officials believe this facility might assist in alleviating airport congestion.
