While the United States is still debating whether to install a voter ID system and Guyana is in the process of implementing ID cards for all people, Brazil is going one step further.

Brazilian domestic pets will soon be eligible for a free Animal ID card as the National Register of Domestic Animals enters its last testing phase, Agencia Brasil reported earlier.

The registry, which is available through the Gov.br website, aims to enhance animal care and control. This code enables anybody to access guardian information via a cell phone camera.

Law 15.046/2024, adopted in November and signed into law by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, established a framework to prevent animal abandonment and mistreatment while also improving animal disease control.

According to the new law, the register must include the owner's identification as well as information about the animals' origin and features, such as breed, sex, real or presumed age, vaccinations administered, illnesses incurred or being treated, and the location where the animal is kept.

It will be the guardians' responsibility to report the sale, donation, or death of the pet, including the cause.

Optional microchips with a unique code connected to the owner's data can also be added.

To guarantee security, the card will have a unique QR code that can be printed and fastened to the pet's collar. This feature will make identification easier in the event of escape, loss, or abandonment.
