X9 Issues QR Code Standard & Other Digital Transactions News Briefs
The Accredited Standards Committee X9 Inc. (X9) recently announced the introduction of X9.148, a standard for QR Code Protection Using Cryptographic Solutions.
The new standard guides the financial services sector on how to use cryptography to build trustworthy, secure QR codes, as well as definitions and descriptions for secure QR code usage in financial applications.
X9 releases cryptography-based QR code protection standard
The standard establishes the scope and context of security analysis by first providing an overview of QR code-based payment.
The fundamental framework is defined, and the key roles are specified.
Some fundamental processes are required for such payment services, and there are numerous variants in practice since flexibility is one of the most significant advantages of QR code-scanning payments.
However, security must still be a top priority.
"The use of cryptography supports the persistent protection of any QR code content," stated Jeff Stapleton, chair of the X9 working group that created the standard. "This creates new options for payors and payees. Protecting the QR code allows for easier transmission and storage.
