Miami Parking Authority Is Covering Up QR Codes to Protect Drivers
The Miami Parking Authority is removing all QR codes from over 7,000 signs across the city to protect drivers from recurring scams that target their personal financial information.
According to city officials, scammers have started pasting stickers with fake QR codes over real ones in an attempt to steal people's information.
"We are removing all QR codes from our side, so now if we see one, we know it is fraudulent," said Alejandra Argudin, CEO of the Miami Parking Authority.
"Those QR codes lead you to fraudulent websites that could compromise your banking information when making a payment for parking," he added.
Miami Parking Authority is covering up QR codes
In recent weeks, the Miami Parking Authority discovered multiple fake QR code stickers covering the real codes on parking signs around the city.
Several stickers even imitate the logos of actual mobile apps to trick victims.
According to the agency, the investigation began after similar frauds were reported around the country, including in Florida. Last month, the city of Fort Lauderdale issued a similar caution to drivers.
"We urge the public not to use any QR codes and to use the Pay by Phone app, so that they can keep their personal and banking information secure," Argudin said.
While crews try to cover up the codes, some stay noticeable. So, if you see a QR code sticker on a parking sign in Miami, please call the Miami Parking Authority's 24-hour hotline right away.
