Chip and QR Code-Equipped Smart Cards for DLs and RCs
The transportation department is getting ready to roll out new smart cards with chips and QR codes for registration certificates (RC) and driving licenses (DL).
In February 2024, the present vendor, which has been providing smart cards with chips for the last 15 years, will complete its contract.
The current vendor has reportedly given more than 2 crore DLs and 2 crore RCs throughout Karnataka, according to sources in the transport department.
For DLs and RCs, the switch to smart cards started in 2009.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has established requirements that the newly suggested cards must meet to ensure consistency in their issuance across the country.
More printed material will be available to them than to their predecessors.
