Brand History
Mallya opened the first distillery for McDowell and Company in Cherthala, Kerala, in 1959.
From there, he started bottling Dorville French Brandy and Bisquit Brandy made from imported concentrates.
In 1961, the business started operating India's first distillation facility at Cherthala, where extra neutral alcohol (ENA) was produced.
Following the cancellation of the import contract for No. 1 Bisquit Brandy, the McDowell's No. 1 brand was introduced in 1963–1964.
The first iterations of McDowell's No. 1 Whisky and No. 1 Rum were introduced in 1968 and 1990–1991 respectively in Celebration (dark) and Caribbean (white) varieties.
The business was first established in 1999 under the name McDowell Spirits Ltd. On April 1, 2000, McDowell and Company Ltd. became McDowell Spirits Ltd. On October 17, 2006, the business once more changed its name to United Spirits Limited (USL).
A London-based design consultancy company called Claessens International was brought in in 2000 to redesign the series' packaging and design.

Whiskey complements a wide range of foods, much like a good wine does. However, because the distillation process and the final product are so complex, whiskey is not usually designated for any one food group.
Fortunately, we've made things easier for you by compiling our best food pairing to go with your next dram. Salutes!
